Wow, so finally the first episode of season 3 aired, and I wasn't sure if I should be hopefull or not. I read a few spoilers and really didn't wanna believe that thoose could be true. I guess I was wrong.

The show opens with a recap of season 2, wich I could have done without as the sheer amount of insipid drama of that season is still haunting me to this very day. I have to admit though, I really liked the montage with the funk music! But thats it for the good parts.

Fast forward to Alice hosting her radio show. I have to admit here, that Alice is definatly and by far my favorite character on the show. She and Dana were the only things that kept me suffering through season 2, just too see thoose two happy together, having fun. Now you might already anticipate that I wasn't to happy with the changes to them in this new season. They obviously weren't satisfied breaking thoose two up, they had to turn poor Alice into a pillpoping, road rageing, looney toon who stalks Dana for 6 month already. Yeah I totally buy that for a dollar...

I know, some of you, well actually most of you, will probably say that it was only done for laughs and was done to add more humor to the show. I like to disagree here. It's one thing to add humor to a show that was painfully dramatic in season 2, but it is a totally diffrent thing to turn the whole show itself into one big joke!

It isn't just Alice and Dana they turned into a painfully sad joke this season. They also frecked up Jenny, Helena, Kit and even Bette & Tina!The only characters that seemed to me like halfway normal human beings were Shane and Carmen. There is such a sheer abundance of ridiculous scenes in this first episode that it just made me shake me head in disbelieve.

There is this sex therapist that Bette&Tina visit, who suggests a red clown nose to spice things up between them. Then of course Bette went postal on a straight guy because he took the instrument she wanted for Angelica. A minute later we see that Helena changed 180° from evil biatch to heavenly best friend saint, who also manages to find the only fortuneteller on this planet that can actually see the future! YAY! I so friggin buy that for a dollar... Woohoo...

But noooo, thats not enough, I have to suffer through Kit and her son talking about „vaginal dryness“ and have to somehow make myself believe that the total trainwrek Jenny was at the end of season 2 only took 6 month of therapy in some redneck town to turn back into the person she was in season 1. Praise the lord, its a friggin miracle! But there is more! Bette obviously cares more about the aesthetic look on her house, then the well being of Angelica. You go girl!! Babyproofing is for pansies!!!

My favorite in this episode the socialworker, though. She sure was right about the weird atachment parenting and the babyproofing that was lacking, but when she was obviously getting off talking about touching a man, the only thing I could do was stare in disbelieve while my right eye started to twitch. Yup thats right, wheelchair chick is a friggin freak of nature too. YAY! So much fun.... NOT!

Yes, I wanted a bit more lighthearted comedy then in season 2, but I didn't want the show to become a silly freak show!

So to sum this episode up let me cite a famous cartoon character „Screw you guys, I'm goin home!“ (Eric Cartman, Southpark)
Yup thats right, no more L-Word for me, I give up, I can't take no more of this.

It all started really promising with the pilot, and I totally thought, this show really has the potantial to be diffrent and really really good. I was still hopefull after the show went downhill over the course of season 1 and figured that they could save it with good season 2. To bad it didn't happen. Instead we got a season 2 that was so extremely over dramataic that it was nearly impossible to watch. As I said, I did keep watching for Alice&Dana's scenes, as they were really sweet, funny and just great together. Unfortuantely the horrible writing killed this show for me.

If you take a episode from season 1 and this first episode of season 3 you won't be able to find any development or changes in any of the characters. Ok granted, Alice is nuts now, and Jenny is now openly gay, but thats it. The rest is same old same old. Take Bette for example, there is not an inch of growth detectable in her character, even though she went through hell in season 2. They all have come full circle in season 3, and that just proofs how incredibly bad this show is written.

What this show would have really needed is some reality to anchor all thoose characters and give them a sense of reality. The way it is now, they are living in a lesbian fantasy world that doesn't exist here. The Problem with the characters is that they are all entirely centered around them being gay, and that being gay is what seems to make them who they are. I'm not sure about you guys, but I think that's a load of horseshit!

Being gay is part of you, but it in no way is defining who you are as a person. Just as me being straight, isn't defining who I am either. At the moment this show is doing a disservice to all gay people, as it depicts the characters as if they were sticking to their own „kind“ or living in a secluded enclave, far away from the grittynes of reality.

Instead they should show that gay people are just like everybody else, living their daily lives dealing with their daily set of problems. For good measure throw in some minor straight friend side characters to show that being gay doesn't mean you live like a leper. The thing we straight people need to learn is that its a non issue wether you a straight or gay, it doesn't make you a bad person, nor does it make you a good person either. Our sexuality is just a tiny part of all the things that define who we are and nothing that should be dividing people.

Unfortunately this show isn't doing much good to show that to us. Instead we see superficial two diemensional characters with an added „lesbian“ stamp living in a gay bubble in some far away fairytale land. Of course you may say that it's a show from gay women, about gay women, for gay women, but nevertheless it will be scrutenized by other people who might walk away with the impression that being gay is just like on that tv show, because it was made by gay women for gay women.

So Ms. Chaiken I'd say you either return your members card to the L-Club, or you start to shape this mess up and give it some well needed down to earth reality, or I won't be the only one walking away from this mess dissapointed.
